Coral Spotlight: Acropora selago
Share
This acropora species is found all over the world, and has remarkable coloration with a
unique branching structure. While some similarities are found with Acropora tenuis, this
coral has thinner branches, and long, tubular axial coralites.
To us, Acropora selago is one of the most underrated corals in the hobby!
Where do they come from?
These amazing acropora are found all over the pacific islands, off the coast of Africa,
and both east and western Australia. In our opinion, the most incredible selago specimens
come from Malaysia (see WORMS).
In the wild, they are found in a "wide variety of environments, from exposed upper reef slopes to
turbid lagoons" (Vernon, 1986).
One thing we love about this species is the colonies' branching shapes. They look very similar
to Acropora speciosa (another of our favorite acropora species).
Care requirements?
In our experience, this acropora species is very similar to Acropora tenuis in terms of
care requirements.
Place Acropora selago on the side of your rock work. They will plate out in a
dense network of branches from there.
They are definitely a bit more challenging than other acropora species, but I definitely
recommend giving them a shot if you are looking for something a bit different!
Where do I get one?
We get these in sometimes, so please check our SPS collection to see if we have any in
stock, or feel free to send us an email if you don't see one
and want one!
